The true meaning of love/agape:
My dear people, let us love one another since love comes from God and everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Anyone who fails to love can never have known God, because God is love. God’s love for us was revealed when God sent into the world His only Son so that we could have life through Him; this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but God’s love for us when He sent His Son to be the sacrifice that takes our sins away.
My dear people, since God has loved us so much, we too should love one another. No one has ever seen God; but as long as we love one another God will live in us and His love will be complete in us. We can know that we are living in Him and He is living in us because He lets us share His Spirit. We ourselves saw and we testify that the Father sent His Son as savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him, and he in God. We ourselves have known and put our faith in God’s love towards ourselves. God is love and anyone who lives in love lives in God, and God lives in him.
Love will come to its perfection in us when we can face the day of Judgment without fear; because even in this world we have become as He is. In love there can be no fear, but fear is driven out by perfect love: because to fear is to expect punishment, and anyone who is afraid is still imperfect in love. We are to love, then, because He loved us first. Anyone who says, ‘I love God’, and hates his brother is a liar, since a man who does not love the brother that he can see cannot love God, whom he has never seen. So this is the commandment that He has given us, that anyone who loves God must also love his brother.
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten by God; and whoever loves the Father that begot Him loves the child whom He begets. We can be sure that we love God’s children if we love God Himself and do what He has commanded us; this is what loving God is—
keeping His commandments; and His commandments are not difficult, because anyone who has been begotten by God has already overcome the world; this is the victory over the world– our faith. 1 John 4:7 – 5:4
John points out to believe the truth is to love God as Father, and also to love all God’s other children (humanity). In the O.T. ‘truth (contrasting with unrighteousness and evil) often means the rightness of life morally well lived in accordance with the will of God, in fidelity to Him. This is the way John uses the word (in the N.T.). As there is a double commandment to fidelity and love (1John3:23), people are said to ‘belong to truth’ if they believe (c 2:21,22) and love (3:19); they are said to live ‘in union with (walk according to) truth’ (c 2Jn4-6, 3Jn3-6), to ‘do the truth’ (1Jn3:21), is to perform or act it (not just say it but actually do it), as opposed to committing sin, doing wrong. Jesus Christ is our witness to the truth (Jn18:37) we must worship in spirit and in truth (Jn4:24) and in love.
Love is selfless, involuntary, a strong desire for emotional union with another person, strong feelings of affections, protection, warmth, respect. Love involves feelings and is freely given (c also 1Corinthians 13:4). It’s when we apply logic to love is when it gets complicated. And is it love when we philosophically dissect it..?..
Loving one another is not being demanding, judgmental. We are asked to love our brother as ourselves, not to judge (Matthew 7:1; Luke 6:7), but to love the person not the sin. To pray that they see their error, see the true meaning of love and change their ways.
God bless us all to live in truth, the truth of Jesus Christ and to emulate the love He showed/shows us. Amen.
Thank you for visiting 🙂
