2 Thessalonians 2

Plz note: I’m using the KJV, and applying Strong’s Concordance and the King James Bible dictionary* with certain words, to emphasize it’s meaning. I also highlighted the chapter to flow easily with the emphasized words. In doing this the meaning Paul was expressing comes alive in us. Be blessed…

2 Thessalonians 2:3-17

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

That ye be not soon shaken/disturb in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Let no man deceive/beguile you by any means/revolution for that day shall not come except there come a falling away/defection of truth first, and the man/human of sin/offense, trespass be revealed/disclosed, the son of perdition/ruin, lost, sin, Who opposeth/instead of, contrast to and exalteth/becomes haughty himself above/upon all/every manner of, means that is called/related to God, or that is worshipped/devotion, adored; so that/thus therefore he as/in the manner of God sitteth/sits down in the temple/sacred place of God shewing/to show off himself that he is God.

Remember/Recollect ye not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things?   (v6) And now/Henceforth ye know/be aware, see what withholdeth/holds down, that he/self, might be revealed/disclosed in his time/season. For/A reason the mystery/secret of iniquity/illegality, violation of the law doth already/even now work/is active; only he who now letteth/posses, holds down, hinders will let/permit, to remain without intermeddling, until he be taken/removed out of the way

In this context we see that the “he” could be the Holy Spirit, God Himself, (a ‘mighty power which can prevent the development of the great Antichrist’) that hinders this evil (satan’s influence, power in this man), until this evil is removed at Christ’s coming. But it can also be the Archangel Michael holding this evil down til its appointed time. Or a natural tendency, a civil/church power that prevents the antichrist to manifest itself until the appropriate time, or just maybe a combination of. Scripture’s doesn’t say who or what, only that we will know. “Whose coming is after the working of Satan with all powers and signs and lying wonders”.

And then shall that Wicked/transgressor be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him (the Antichrist), whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

And with all deceivableness/delusion, lies of unrighteousness/injustice and moral wrongness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned/condemned, judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Verse 6. – And now. The particle “now” has been variously interpreted. Some connect it with the restraining influence: “And ye know what now withholdeth;” but if so, there would have been a different arrangement of the words in the original. Others consider it as a mere particle of transition: “Now, to pass over to another subject;” but there is no transition, the apostle continues his description of the man of sin. It is rather to be considered as a particle of time: “Now ye know, because you have been instructed on this point.” Ye know; Paul having told them when he was at Thessalonica. What withholdeth; hindereth. The hindrance does not refer to the prevention of the apostle from speaking freely on this subject, lest he should involve himself in political difficulties; nor to any delay in the coming of Christ; but to a restraint upon the appearance of the man of sin: “Ye know what prevents his open manifestation.” That he; namely, the man of sin. Might be revealed in his time; literally, in his season; in his proper time, the time appointed by God. Events were not yet ripe for his appearance. Just as there was a “fulness of time” when Christ should appear (Galatians 4:4), so there was a “fulness of time” when the man of sin should be revealed; there was a series of events going on which would culminate in his revelation. The nature of this restraining or withholding influence will afterwards be considered; whatever it was, the Thessalonians were formerly explicitly informed.

2:5-12 Something hindered or withheld the man of sin. It is supposed to be the power of the Roman empire, which the apostle did not mention more plainly at that time. Corruption of doctrine and worship came in by degrees, and the usurping of power was gradual; thus the mystery of iniquity prevailed. Superstition and idolatry were advanced by pretended devotion, and bigotry and persecution were promoted by pretended zeal for God and his glory. This mystery of iniquity was even then begun; while the apostles were yet living, persons pretended zeal for Christ, but really opposed him. The fall or ruin of the antichristian state is declared. The pure word of God, with the Spirit of God, will discover this mystery of iniquity, and in due time it shall be destroyed by the brightness of Christ’s coming. Signs and wonders, visions and miracles, are pretended; but they are false signs to support false doctrines; and lying wonders, or only pretended miracles, to cheat the people; and the diabolical deceits with which the antichristian state has been supported, are notorious. The persons are described, who are his willing subjects. Their sin is this; They did not love the truth, and therefore did not believe it; and they were pleased with false notions. God leaves them to themselves, then sin will follow of course, and spiritual judgments here, and eternal punishments hereafter. These prophecies have, in a great measure, come to pass, and confirm the truth of the Scriptures. This passage exactly agrees with the system of popery, as it prevails in the Roman-ish church, and under the Romanish popes. But though the son of perdition has been revealed, though he has opposed and exalted himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; and has spoken and acted as if he were a god upon earth, and has proclaimed his insolent pride, and supported his delusions, by lying miracles and all kinds of frauds; still the Lord has not yet fully destroyed him with the brightness of his coming; that and other prophecies remain to be fulfilled before the end shall come.

But we are bound/to be under obligation to give thanks/be grateful always to God for you, brethren/brother beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning [of time] chosen/taken for Himself you to salvation/rescue, deliver through sanctification/purification of the Spirit/Holy Spirit and belief of the truth:

  1. Aloha Lost Coin Blog,
Perhaps this helps with 2 Thes 2ff. Re 1:1 God wrote the Revelation. He is the author and therefore the script and timings are His. Re 1:18, Jesus and only Jesus has the keys to hell and death. Ge 3:15, seed of Satan (anti-Christ) and seed of woman(Christ Jesus) kill each other. Jesus in heart of the earth, Mt 12:40 immediately after being placed into tomb and sealed. Habakkuk 3:13 He splits angel Apollyon’s head in half to his shoulders. Mortal head wound of anti-Christ, by a sword Re 13:14. 2Thes 2:3 – man, son of perdition is false prophet, a man, Re 13:18. Verse 8 is “that wicked” the anti-Christ. So God the Father tells Jesus, only one who has the key, (takes him [Jesus is jailer] out of the way) to let anti-Christ Apollyon out of bottomless pit. Jesus gives the key to an angel, who fell like a star, Re 9:1, to open the bottomless pit. He, the seed of Satan, that Jesus killed with a sword and then healed, is the king of the locusts, the beast of the bottomless pit and an angel, Apollyon/Abaddon. Habakkuk describes his rising and wants to be dead when he heard that. Habakkuk 3: 15,16. Note: Hab 3:1-13 is Jesus threshing the heathen in Hell.

    1. Thank you for stopping by. You given me an almost mystical perspective of your view. I see some comparisons and yet others need pause, all needs to be reexamine with the Written word. Although Scripture (mostly Daniel and Revelation), describes prophecy in mythological terms such as dragons, great beast, etc. (stuff legends are made of). It’s to make us think, remember them as symbols that represent our state of affairs through-out history. I agree, the man of perdition is the Wicked one, the Antichrist, Apollyon (the Greek name for the angel of death), everything that is the opposite of God the Father and His Son. And the son of perdition is the false prophet, the henchman who further deceives.

Believers of the Word have victory through Christ and your way of describing this still leaves me with this conclusion. When we accept Christ into our hearts and mind our person changes to reflect His essence, His kindness, His love. Our eyes are open to receive His truth. And it is like He is a mighty warrior on our behave (which He is). When Christ abides in us we patiently and persistently imitate Him and His love, without the violence and hatred that leads to persecution of those belief. He will take vengeance (Ro 12:19). We are only human and we get angry at such apostasy but not to the point of causing harm to another, when we are to love one another as brothers (Lev 19:18; Ma 22:39).

The Wicked one, also called the great dragon, that serpent of old, the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world (Rv 12:9), knows his time is short. Wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it, (Ec 8:8). Satan is the prince of the air, all his attributes were left intact, except in him was found evil thoughts that manifested into a revolt in the heavens and so had to be removed (as he will be remove permanently at the appointed time). He became evil impersonated not created this way. People paint him out as a red devilish creature for the evil in him but he was created the most beautiful archangel, He’s immortal. Thereby he has changed his heart but not his looks. He along with his minions that followed him were cast down to earth, in the lower level of the heavens. Only a few of his minions took it a step further in their revolt, the ‘watchers’ and took mortal wives (Gn 6), that opened a whole new ‘can of worms’, inwhich God had to step in and vanquish the earth’s inhabitants with a flood. These are the ones who are shackled in the bottomless pit, sheol, hell. Angels are spirit beings of higher authority they neither marry or given into marriage. By this outright disobedience they were sentence, chained in this prison awaiting judgment. Satan and the rest of his crew are still roaming the land and satan himself still has visitation rights to the courts of heaven, accusing his brethren. But the time is at hand when one of his visit turns to a war with the Archangel Michael (Rv 12:7), and satan will be permanently cast out of heaven. This battle with the Archangel of God/righteousness and his consequence toss out of heaven will furiously anger him. With vengeance he attacks the children of God. This intense drama (starts the Tribulation period), is still to come, we still have God’s protection, barrier keeping this at bay, (2Th 2:7). Satan has been preparing this great revolt since, causing all kinds of havoc on planet earth to stop acknowledging, worshiping God, leading to the closing of the drama between good and evil. There is no love in evil, no love in hatred. But I digress…

Getting back to your point, Habakkuk 3:13 to me, is God answering his prayer from the previous chapter. God’s glory destroys the wicked and lays it (evil) open for all to see: “You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the evil, To lay him open from thigh to neck.”
Rv 13:14 speaks in symbolism about the tribulation period where the false prophet will receive a head wound but live to have a statue made in honor of his god and demand everyone to bow to it. 2 Th 2:3 tells us two things must happen the great tribulation and the Evil one exposed in the guise of a man who will be posses with his spirit. Rv 13:18 speaks of a code of letters being the number of man 666 and v8 speaks of all of mankind whose names are ‘not written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life’ will worship. Habakkuk 3:1-13 is his prayer in the mist of trouble he praises the strength and triumph of God. Satan copies God and twists His words, he has no power to create.

I agree and Scripture tells us, upon Christ’s death he went to get the keys of hell and death (Rv 1:18). Having these keys He has control/authority over the death sentence. Hence, He freely gave His life and picked it up again (Jn 10:17-18). He is the First fruit risen to life from death. He gave up His Spirit for us and bestows that Spirit on all who believe. He has authority to gather His followers whether dead or alive, at the appointed time. He is our Warrior, Avenger. We are to follow His decree of kindness and peace in all things, showing who we put our trust in, advancing His cause not create havoc or violence. Even in the face of adversity. The Book ends well for believers, when we stick to God’s plan.

Rv 9:1-2 states an angel is given the key to open the bottomless pit and the captives there are set free to join Satan and his all out war with the saints. The key represents control and God has ultimate control. Letting the final act of good and evil come to its conclusion. Woe to them that side with evil. In this Celestial drama, Satan finally gets his 15minutes (seven years) of fame, but does he really..?.. God is allowing him just so much, to make His Divine point how wrong and destructive evil is. Satan thought he killed our Lord but only killed His fleshy body not the Spirit within. God is Spirit, therefore Jesus was able to resurrect Himself to a glorious body. He is coming to do the same to every believer, at the last trumpet call, believers will be caught up to meet Him and live with Him, enjoying the wedding feast prepared for those who never gave up hope, along with the place He has prepared in advance (Jn 14:2-3). While the wicked our receiving God’s wrath.

In Rv 20:1-3 states a messenger of God will have the key and chain to arrest, chain and shut the door to the bottomless pit where satan will be for a thousand years, alone to contemplate his transgression. Unfortunately he learns nothing in his captivity. After the thousand years, he’s released and thinks to upstart his revolt again, but this time God will not allow it. He will be destroy just like all his cohorts at Jesus’ coming will be, along with the 2nd resurrection of the dead who satan convinces to join him one final time.

“So let us feast upon Him and grow strong in the Christian life, leaving entirely behind us the cancerous old life with all its hatreds and wickedness. Let us feast instead upon the pure bread of honor and sincerity and truth..” ~1 Co 5:8.
Jesus is our conquerer and able to crush evil whether carnal or spiritual. He shook the house of evil’s foundation! (Hab 3:13). God will use His own as He sees fit as this drama comes to a close. We are to remain vigilant, aware of the times, always in prayer to be found worthy of being called a child of the Most High. In Christ we too are conquers.

Again, Thank you for stopping by and giving me food for thought, God bless you.
